After more than six years, Kumaru Usman and Leon
Edwards will once again be in front of the public. A thrilling fight between
two of the UFC's best 170-pound fighters. Kamaru Usman vs. Leon Edwards is the
main event for UFC 278 on August 20 from Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.
These two welterweights met seven years ago but a
lot has changed since then. Usman is looking to stake a claim as one of the
greatest fighters of all time, while Edwards is on a nine-fight winning streak.
UFC 278: Usman vs. Edwards 2
Usman won the 170-pound title at UFC 235 against
Tyron Woodley. After which Usman has successfully defended his title five times
so far. Including two times against Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal and one
against Gilbert Burns.
Edwards has also been torn up himself since their
first meeting - the most recent loss of his career. He is 9-0 in his last ten
fights (one no contest), with his most recent win coming against Nate Diaz at
UFC 263 in June 2021. Edwards won eight in a row—including victories over
Vicente Luque, Donald "Cowboy." Cerrone and Rafael dos Anjos—before a
no contest with Bilal Muhammad.
According to the official odds on the UFC website,
Usman enters the bout as the favorite, with the greatest pound-for-pound UFC
fighter on the planet coming in at -345 to Edwards' +285.
The biggest factor for us in this bout is Edwards'
takedown defense, as will usually be Usman's approach. Edwards has improved
greatly in this aspect of the MMA game and will want to trade stands with the
170-pound champion throughout the contest.
Therefore, the game plan for Edwards must be to
control the range and impose his mastery of striking to be successful.
Still, this is Usman we're talking about, and he's
proven on numerous occasions that he's more than just a 'late and pro' wrestler,
capable of knockouts and clinch. I am able to dominate.
As much as we'd love to see Edwards become only the
second British champion in UFC history, Usman has a lot of potential in all
aspects of the fight game and we see this being a fight with a lot of focus on
clinch work.
Prediction: Usman wins by decision.
