UFC 278: Kamaru Usman vs. Leon Edwards 2
The UFC is going to storm Salt Lake City, Utah this
weekend. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) headlines a blockbuster
welterweight championship for the first time in more than five years on August
20, 2022, at the Vivant Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.
UFC 278 features a whopping eight "prelim"
undercard bouts to go through this week. In the main event, defending UFC World
Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman will face No. 2 ranked Leon Edwards again.
Which can certainly be considered one of the biggest fights in the UFC
welterweight division.
This is the second fight between two of the best
170-pound rivals in UFC history. In which UFC welterweight champion Kamaru
Usman looks to defend his title and maintain his dominance in the 170-pound
division. While Edwards, on the other hand, will be looking to avenge his
previous loss and join a very exclusive club of British UFC champions.
Usman and Edwards both bring long winning streaks
into their clash. Usman has won 19 consecutive bouts, including five successful
title defenses, since capturing the fight in March 2019. Edwards is on a
nine-fight winning streak. Edwards' only loss came against Usman when the two
fought in December 2015.
And in the co-main event, former featherweight
champion Jose Aldo will take on Merab Dvalishvili in bantamweight action. Since
losing his first two UFC bouts, Dvalishvili has won seven in a row. After a
three-fight losing skid, Aldo has rebounded with three straight wins and is
looking to re-establish himself as a title contender by defeating Dvalishvili.
Also, a highly anticipated middleweight bout will be
set for the PPV card when former champion Luke Rockhold returns to 185 pounds
to take on former title challenger Paulo Costa. Rockhold has not returned to
the Octagon since setting up a fight at light heavyweight in 2019 where he was
soundly knocked out by John Blachowicz. Rockhold has fought just four times since
2016, including a stunning TKO loss to Michael Bisping to relinquish the
185-pound title. Costa, meanwhile, started his career 13-0 but has lost two
straight since 2020, including a TKO loss to Israel Adesanya for the title.
