Get ready for the biggest and most
exciting event of the year. The biggest thunderstorm match in UFC history: A
bloody match between a former roommate and a teammate.
The biggest news so far is that the
feud between George Masvidal and Colby Covington has finally been set for
March. Confirming the news, several people with knowledge of Romushan's plans
said that UFC 272 will be headlined at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on March
5 with verbal agreements with the fighters. UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter
Campbell first announced the pairing via ESPN.
This will be the pair's long-awaited
match for the first time. Fans wanted to see long-time rivals Masvidal and
Covington face-to-face at the Octagon.
The significance of this match can
be deduced from the fact that UFC pay-per-view is usually headlined by the
title fight. It is somewhat rare to come across headlines with this
welterweight competition.
The two fighters are returning after
losing to the same champion Kumaro Usman. Kumaro Usman knockout Masvidal
(35-15) in April and knocked out Covington (16-3) in November.
Masvidal was scheduled to face
Welterweight rival Leon Edwards in December but withdrew from the fight due to
injury, and is now expected to challenge Edwards for the title next time.
UFC 272 was originally set to
feature two title fights, both of which were reportedly delayed until UFC 273
in April. Jجmtin Sterling looks set to defend
his bantamweight title again in the match against interim champion Peter Yan,
while Alexander Volkanowski's featherweight title defense against Max Holloway
has fallen due to a challenger's injury, although expected Chan Sung will step
into the war.
